Even as residential property
markets languish, L.A.'s housing crisis persists. Demand for housing remains so
high in Greater Los Angeles that many working-class residents remain priced
out. Mayor Villaraigosa has proposed a citywide initiative to mandate
affordable housing components in all new projects at the very same time as Wall
Street is reeling from subprime mortgages and builders are shutting down entire
subdivisions. Can the L.A. region afford this new burden, on top of green
building initiatives, increased relocation fees, state laws, and other
restrictions? Can it afford not to?
