It's the Infrastructure, Stupid!

Fri May 21, 2004

Los Angeles was invented by civic visionaries who clairvoyantly understood and repeatedly enlisted the public to invest in the City and region's infrastructure. Once little more than a large pueblo -- with no natural harbor, little water, and a city center far from the coast -- Los Angeles is now the ninth-largest economy on earth, supporting a population of 17 million.

UCSD's Steven Erie, whose recent book, Globalizing L.A.: Trade, Infrastructure, and Regional Development, published by Stanford Press, documents and brings to life our region?s enlightened history of strategically investing and developing our economic capacity to compete globally.

With L.A. again at a major crossroads, and debates about airport, school, rail and water systems in full swing, Erie's voice is essential to those with a stake in keeping L.A. economically strong for coming generations. Join the Forum for this fascinating discussion, moderated by David Abel, the publisher of L.A.'s infrastructure monthly, the Metro Investment Report.
