Los Angeles City Planning: Oxymoron or Untapped Potential?

Fri May 20, 2005

What role should L.A.'s next Planning Director play: Visionary or consensus-builder, activist or accommodator? Should L.A. be planned, can it be planned, or should it continue to grow in an ad hoc manner, with policy shaped one project at a time? Can the need for regional planning in the face of scarce resources ever be reconciled with locally interested neighborhood councils, strong city councilmembers and influential developers? Conversely, could these traditional "roadblocks" to good planning turn out to be its very foundation?

Join the Westside Urban Forum in welcoming retiring Planning Director Con Howe as he reflects on 15 years' experience leading L.A.'s Department of City Planning, exploring the challenges and opportunities that come with the job. Occidental Professor and activitist Robert Gottlieb, former Councilwoman and current Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg and Dana Cuff, UCLA Architecture Department, will add their voices as we ask what planning will mean in our future city, how the next mayor should define the Planning Director's role, and what type of person the City should strive to attract to this job of untold potential.
