Thoroughfares, Wedges and Cloverleafs: Reimagining Freeway-Adjacent Land Uses

Friday, July 18, 2014

LA County has 527 miles of urban freeway and, by one count, at least 960 acres of unused land along the freeway right of way. Can these ribbons of green (or brown), partial cloverleafs, and odd wedges have a productive use. More broadly, how can Los Angeles make the streets around freeway infrastructure more livable?

With a state highway system in dire need of new funding, should Caltrans, the agency that owns and manages the land, be more aggressive in monetizing its real estate, potentially quite valuable for the right user (as storage or warehouse/logistics space)?

Can some of this land be reclaimed by local residents as community space, or at least beautified?

This panel brings together a Caltrans representative, a neighborhood activist and an urban designer to discuss the possibilities and challenges of repurposing LA's freeway-adjacent landscape.

Tony Harris, Point C Partners, former Chief Deputy Director and Acting Director of Caltrans
