Great
cities are built around great parks. Los Angeles's Great Park, Griffith Park,
is currently in the midst of a major visioning and planning process. The Master
Plan is in review by the City of Los Angeles and under attack by neighborhood
and environmental groups who are unhappy with both the plan and the process.
The plan by Melendrez is intended to maximize public benefit and public use of
the park while minimizing the impact on residents and the environment. Is this
an enlightened and visionary scheme, or undue development and commercialization
in the park? Does improvement of the city's major park come at the expense of
neighborhood parks and recreation in other parts of the city where there might
be more need? Who decides and how? Find out for yourself as Melendrez presents
the plan, and critics respond with their objections.
