Thinking Out of the (Big) Box: Good Employer, or Bad Neighbor?

Fri Mar 21, 2008

Your local big-box retailer has become a dominant fixture of the cityscape. These massive, often windowless single-story buildings, surrounded by acres of surface parking, are feared as agents of change and traffic generators. Yet these retailers also deliver better prices for consumers, employ a large part of the local labor force, and generate significant sales tax revenues. Local retailers fear being driven out of business. We will discuss these issues, plus look at recent big-box projects that start to reconcile these apparently conflicting imperatives in ways that are more pedestrian- and community-friendly. Please join the Westside Urban Forum on Friday March 21, 2008 at 7:30 am for a lively and insightful conversation on the pros and cons of this dominant retail format in our city.
